Road Safety Equipment UAE – Complete Guide for Contractors and Project Managers
Every construction project, road maintenance programme, and traffic diversion in the UAE requires the correct road safety equipment to protect workers, drivers, and the public. This guide covers the essential road safety equipment categories used on UAE road projects, explains what each item does, and outlines when each is required. HMJ Contracting supplies and deploys road safety equipment across Dubai and the UAE — call +971 50 778 9046 for advice on your project.
1. Truck Mounted Attenuators (TMAs)
A Truck Mounted Attenuator is a crash-absorbing device fitted to the rear of a shadow vehicle that follows behind a work crew on an active road. The TMA is designed to absorb the energy of a vehicle that strikes the work zone, dramatically reducing the severity of the impact for both the errant driver and the workers ahead.
In the UAE, TMAs are required on all projects involving work on or adjacent to live traffic lanes on roads above a specified speed limit. RTA Dubai specifies the minimum TMA rating for different road classifications. Learn more about what a truck mounted attenuator is and how truck mounted attenuators work. For rental, see our TMA rental Dubai service.
2. Crash Cushions
A crash cushion is a fixed or semi-portable energy-absorbing device placed in front of rigid hazards — the end of a barrier run, a concrete wall, a toll booth nose, or any immovable object that a driver could strike. When a vehicle hits a crash cushion rather than the hard object behind it, the cushion collapses progressively and absorbs much of the impact energy.
Crash cushions are required at diversion merge points, lane taper ends, work zone entries, and anywhere a hard obstacle is exposed to traffic. HMJ provides crash cushion rental across Dubai and the UAE, with deployments in locations including Jebel Ali, Business Bay, and Al Quoz.
3. Traffic Cones and Delineators
Traffic cones are the most visible element of any work zone setup. They define lane boundaries, guide drivers through diversions, and mark the edges of closures. In the UAE, cones used on public roads must meet specifications for height, reflectivity, and weight to prevent them being displaced by passing traffic or wind. Delineator posts serve a similar purpose on longer runs where frequent cone placement is impractical.
4. Variable Message Signs (VMS) and Warning Signs
Advance warning signs alert drivers to upcoming work zones, speed reductions, and lane changes long before they reach the disruption. In the UAE, mandatory advance signing distances are set by road classification and speed limit. Variable Message Signs (VMS) — electronic boards that can display changing messages — are increasingly used on major roads to give real-time guidance to drivers approaching work zones.
5. Water-Filled Barriers and Concrete Barriers
Barriers provide physical separation between live traffic and the work zone. Water-filled plastic barriers are portable, easy to deploy, and reusable — suitable for temporary lane closures and short-duration projects. Concrete barriers (including New Jersey profiles) offer higher containment for longer-term or higher-speed situations. The choice between barrier types depends on speed limit, project duration, and the level of containment required by the traffic management plan.
6. Arrow Boards
Arrow boards are large illuminated signs — typically mounted on a vehicle or trailer — that display a flashing arrow or chevron directing traffic to move away from a closed lane. They are positioned at the start of the lane closure taper and are visible from several hundred metres in daylight and at night. Arrow boards are required on most multi-lane road works in the UAE.
7. Road Marking Equipment
Temporary road markings — including lane lines, directional arrows, and stop lines — are required when permanent markings are obscured or when traffic is being directed differently from normal. Temporary markings must be clearly visible and, importantly, must be fully removed when the project is complete so as not to confuse drivers.
RTA Compliance for Road Safety Equipment in Dubai
In Dubai, all road safety equipment used on public roads must comply with RTA standards. This covers equipment specifications, placement rules, and the overall traffic management plan that governs how equipment is deployed. Projects that use non-compliant or incorrectly placed equipment risk inspection failures, work stoppages, and legal liability. HMJ Contracting ensures all equipment we supply and deploy meets RTA Dubai requirements. See our RTA-approved TMAs and crash cushions page and our RTA drawings and NOC approval service for more detail.
