Crash Cushion Specifications Dubai – Standards, Ratings, and RTA Requirements

Specifying the correct crash cushion for a Dubai road project is not a matter of picking any available unit. The road speed, hazard type, and RTA requirements determine the minimum specification your crash cushion must meet. Using an under-specified system puts lives at risk and creates a compliance failure. HMJ Contracting advises on and supplies correctly specified crash cushions for all Dubai road types. Key Crash Cushion Specifications

Test Level (TL) Rating

Crash cushions are rated by the speed and vehicle weight they are tested to absorb. The most common rating for Dubai’s high-speed roads is MASH TL-3, which covers impacts up to 100 km/h from both passenger cars and pickup trucks. Lower test levels exist for urban environments with reduced speed limits. See our crash cushion TL-3 rental UAE page.

Redirective vs Non-Redirective

Redirective crash cushions guide vehicles that strike at an angle back towards the traffic lane, preventing penetration into the work zone. Non-redirective systems absorb head-on impacts only. For highway applications the RTA typically requires redirective systems. See our crash cushion types guide for a full comparison.

Width and Length Dimensions

Crash cushion dimensions must match the hazard they are protecting and the available space. A crash cushion that is too narrow for the barrier end it is shielding leaves the hazard partially exposed. Dimensions are specified in the manufacturer’s installation guide and must be confirmed against the approved traffic management drawings.

Restorability

After absorbing an impact, some crash cushions can be restored on site and returned to service. Others must be replaced entirely. For long-term projects on high-traffic roads in Dubai, restorable systems reduce downtime and cost after an incident.

How Road Speed Determines Crash Cushion Specification

  • Roads posted 80–120 km/h — MASH TL-3 minimum, redirective preferred
  • Roads posted 60–80 km/h — TL-2 may be acceptable depending on RTA-approved plan
  • Urban roads below 60 km/h — lower-rated systems may be used with RTA approval
