A diversion route can look correct on a drawing but still create problems when implemented on site. Before opening a temporary diversion to live traffic, the project team should verify the full route from the driver’s perspective and confirm that the physical setup matches the intended arrangement.

1. Drive or Walk the Full Diversion Route

Review the entire route, not only the closure point. Check whether a driver can follow the diversion from the first advance warning sign through each turn and back to the normal route.

2. Verify Every Junction Decision Point

At each junction, confirm:

• Directional information is visible in time.
• The intended turn is physically possible.
• Existing signs do not contradict the diversion.
• Drivers are not directed into a restricted or unsuitable access.

3. Check Sign Sequence and Visibility

Temporary signs should follow a logical sequence. Confirm that vegetation, parked vehicles, construction equipment, lighting conditions or other temporary works do not block important signs.

4. Review Lane Width and Turning Space

Where the diversion uses local roads, service roads or temporary access, confirm that the route can accommodate the vehicles expected to use it. Tight corners, loading activity or parked vehicles may change the practical capacity of the route.

5. Check Pedestrian Interfaces

Review crossings, footpaths, bus stops and access points where pedestrians interact with the diverted traffic. Temporary barriers and signs should not create unnecessary blind spots or force pedestrians into live traffic.

6. Confirm Emergency and Site Access

The diversion should preserve required emergency access, construction access and access to adjacent properties where applicable.

7. Verify the Closure Point

At the original road closure or restriction, confirm that the physical setup prevents drivers from accidentally entering the closed section and that the diversion direction is clear.

8. Complete a Pre-Opening Record

A practical verification record can include:

• Date and time of inspection.
• Drawing revision used.
• Route photographs.
• Sign defects or missing equipment.
• Access issues.
• Corrective actions completed before opening.

9. Recheck After Traffic Starts Using the Route

Some issues become visible only after real traffic begins to use the diversion. Observe driver behaviour and correct confusing or damaged signs promptly.
