Where Crash Cushions Go in a Lane Closure

Downstream Taper End

The primary crash cushion position. The downstream taper is where the closed lane merges back into live traffic. The barrier or cone line terminates here, creating a rigid end-point facing oncoming traffic. The crash cushion is placed directly in front of this termination to shield it.

Work Zone Entry Point

Where vehicles could potentially enter the work zone from the side — for example at gaps in the barrier line for construction vehicle access — a crash cushion may be required to protect the entry point.

Barrier Run Termination

If temporary concrete barriers are used, the end of the barrier run must be protected by a crash cushion. An unprotected concrete barrier end is itself a lethal fixed hazard.

Crash Cushion Plus TMA — Both Are Needed
