A vehicle mitigation site assessment helps contractors identify where an errant or unauthorised vehicle could enter a work area, strike a fixed hazard, or place workers at risk. The assessment should be completed before selecting equipment so the protection strategy matches the real site conditions.

1. Map Vehicle Approach Paths

Start by identifying every direction from which a vehicle could approach the work zone. Review live traffic lanes, access roads, construction entrances, service roads, parking areas and temporary routes.

2. Identify Exposed Hazards

Record fixed objects that could cause a severe impact, including barrier ends, concrete structures, equipment, excavations, work vehicles and narrow work-zone entries.

3. Review Speed and Traffic Conditions

Higher approach speeds increase impact severity and change the type of mitigation system required. Consider posted speed, actual operating speed, traffic density, lane geometry and visibility.

4. Separate Mobile and Fixed Protection Needs

Mobile road crews may require a Truck Mounted Attenuator. Fixed hazard points may require a crash cushion or barrier system. Some sites need both.

5. Check Pedestrian and Worker Exposure

Vehicle mitigation is not only about protecting equipment. Review pedestrian routes, worker access points, loading areas and locations where staff work close to live traffic.

6. Confirm Space for Equipment

Protection systems need sufficient installation and recovery space. Check available width, setback, road alignment, drainage features and access for delivery or removal.

7. Coordinate With the Traffic Management Plan

The mitigation layout should match the approved traffic-management arrangement. Avoid selecting equipment in isolation from lane closures, tapers, signs, barriers and work-zone geometry.

8. Document the Assessment

Maintain a simple record of identified hazards, selected controls, site photographs and any assumptions. Reassess the site if the work zone changes.
