What Is a Crash Cushion?

A crash cushion is an energy-absorbing safety device placed in front of a rigid hazard on or near a road. When a vehicle strikes the cushion, the device crushes progressively to absorb the kinetic energy of the impact, bringing the vehicle to a controlled stop. Without the crash cushion, the vehicle would hit the rigid object directly — a barrier end, a concrete wall, or a work zone structure — resulting in far more severe consequences for the vehicle occupants and anyone nearby.
