1. Start With the Approved Drawing

The audit should compare the live work zone against the approved traffic-management drawing. Confirm that the installed arrangement still reflects the intended lane layout, taper, work area and termination zone.

2. Check Advance Warning Signs

Review whether signs are:

• Present in the planned sequence
• Facing approaching traffic correctly
• Visible and not obstructed
• Stable and undamaged
• Consistent with the current traffic arrangement

Remove or cover signs that no longer apply to avoid conflicting information.

3. Inspect Barriers, Cones and Delineation

Look for displaced barriers, gaps, damaged cones or equipment that has moved because of traffic, construction plant or wind. Restore the approved alignment promptly.

4. Verify TMA and Impact Protection

Where a TMA or crash cushion is part of the arrangement, confirm its current location, visibility and condition. Any impact or movement should trigger a specific equipment inspection.

5. Review Pedestrian Routes

Where the project interfaces with footpaths or public areas, check that pedestrian routes remain continuous, visible and protected from work activities.

6. Check Site Access Points

Construction access can change during the project. Confirm gates, delivery routes and entry points do not create unexpected conflicts with the traffic setup.

7. Inspect Night-Time Visibility

For night works or sites that remain installed after dark, verify lights, reflective surfaces, arrow boards and warning devices before low-light conditions begin.

8. Record Defects and Corrective Actions

A useful audit record should show:

• Date and time
• Inspector name
• Defect observed
• Location
• Immediate action taken
• Follow-up responsibility
