Dubai Road Design Standards – RTA Specifications for Road Works

The Roads and Transport Authority sets comprehensive road design standards that govern every aspect of road works in Dubai — from lane widths and taper geometry to sign placement distances and safety equipment specifications. Any traffic management plan, drawing, or road works application that does not comply with these standards will be rejected. HMJ Contracting prepares all documents to RTA road design standards. Key RTA Road Design Standards for Work Zones

Taper Length Standards

Taper lengths — the distance over which traffic merges out of a closed lane — are calculated based on the posted speed limit and the lane width. Higher speeds require longer tapers. Getting this wrong is the single most common reason for NOC rejection. HMJ calculates all taper lengths per the RTA formula.

Advance Warning Sign Distances

The RTA specifies exact distances for advance warning signs — how far ahead of the work zone the first sign must be placed, and the spacing between subsequent signs. Distances vary by road speed and road type.

Safety Equipment Standards

TMA requirements specify minimum impact ratings by road speed. Crash cushion specifications define test levels for different road classifications. All equipment must be RTA-approved.

Drawing Format Standards

Drawings must use RTA-standard symbols, scales, and layouts. See our RTA standard drawings preparation guide and main RTA standard drawings page for format requirements.

Why Compliance with RTA Standards Matters

Non-compliant submissions are rejected without review. Each rejection adds one to three weeks to your project timeline. HMJ prepares all documents to RTA standard on the first submission — see our NOC checklist and how to get an RTA NOC guide.
