1. Identify the Hazard to Be Protected

2. Measure the Available Installation Area

Record the available length and width, nearby barriers, shoulders, kerbs, access points, drainage features, and any physical restrictions that could affect installation or maintenance.

3. Review Traffic Approach and Alignment

The project team should understand how traffic approaches the hazard and whether the planned crash cushion alignment matches the approved arrangement. Avoid treating the system as a standalone item without considering the surrounding work-zone layout.

4. Check Surface and Anchoring Conditions

Different systems may have different installation requirements. Review the surface type and condition, available anchoring area, level changes, and any underground or surface features that could affect installation.

5. Confirm Delivery and Installation Access

Check how the unit will reach the installation point, where the delivery vehicle can stop safely, and whether temporary traffic control is needed during installation.

6. Record the Existing Site Condition

Take clear photographs before installation and record barrier condition, road markings, nearby signs, access restrictions, and any existing damage. This creates a useful reference for installation, handover, and later inspections.

7. Match the Survey to the Approved Plan

The survey should support the approved traffic-management or road-safety arrangement, not replace it. Any significant site conflict should be reviewed before installation proceeds.
